Walking In The Spirit

As a Christian, we are told that we are to walk in the Spirit.  Truth is, many of us really don’t know what that means.  When I was first saved over 30 years ago, I would here people say, “walk in the Spirit” and I would think to myself, “what does that really mean.”  I knew I was a different person after I got saved, that wasn’t a question, because everything about how I wanted to live my life had changed, God was now a part of it.  I truly knew I was born again, and I knew I was born of the Spirit, but how to walk in the Spirit I didn’t get and no one every explained it to me.  I never asked anyone what that meant because I didn’t want anyone to think I didn’t know what being a Christian was.  But each day I would ponder and question within myself about whether I am walking in the Spirit and what that meant.

As I grew in Christ, I began understanding what walking in the Spirit was.  I learned and discovered that it had nothing to do with my human efforts on my part.  Countless many of us Christians live like Galatians, believing in ourselves we have to do some kind of work for and unto God to please God to receive the manifestation of the Spirit of God in our lives, and call this “walking in the Spirit.”  Paul called this “foolish”, “being bewitched”.  Paul tells the Galatians and us that we did not receive the Spirit of God by any works we did but received the Spirit by the faith we had; therefore, we should continue to walk in faith and not try to earn the Spirit.

Many of us, once we get saved, we mistakenly think we have to now do all these things that we know God wants us to do and find ourselves trying to please God with all our works, do’s and do not’s, that we forget how we came to the Lord – “faith”.  We overlook that there is only one way to please God, “Faith”.  (Heb. 11:6 “It’s impossible to please God but by faith.  You must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”  God is not moved by all of the things we want to do for Him or all of the things we want to give up for Him.  What God wants from us is to allow Him to work in and through us, and this can only happen through and by faith.  We fail to realize that it is God who is gives us the ability and capability to operate according to His will for our lives (Eph. 2:8-10 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”   If you notice, everything is already done by God, we are to simply have faith in Him and follow His prescribed method of want He wants for us to His will.

Walking in the Spirit is know that the Spirit abides in you and to have faith in God and be lead by the Spirit of God that resides in you.  The Holy Spirit is the super abounding power of God that resides in and about us, if we have faith in God, we following the prompting and leading of the Holy Spirit, and that is what walking in the Spirit is.  I allow myself to think on and turn to God’s word, as the Holy Spirit brings to me and I make decisions based upon what God has said.  There is no human effort needed, there is only choice of will to believe God and follow His will, (what His word) has said about a situation or circumstance or their is following my own will.  Walking in the Spirit is believing God over myself.  That’s why it’s not of works, lest any man should boast, because we are all supposed to be doing God’s will and not our own, and His will is for all, the same!

So, walking in the Spirit has no human effort, it’s just having faith in what God said.
